Personal Statement
I view therapy as a collaborative effort between myself and my clients which, which aims to resolve specific concerns and to enrich the overall quality of one’s life beyond mere problem solving. Thus, I believe that improving emotional and psychological states is possible by working together, exploring and understanding the nature of the problem/s and focusing on what is important to you. I consider that the function of therapy is as a journey of self-exploration, meant to increase self-understanding and self-awareness. Subsequently, learning strategies to cope, finding alternative ways of managing and moving forward.
Approach
I work with adults (18+) using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – a short-term model of psychotherapy that can vary from 4-20 sessions. The amount of sessions depends on the problem presented and what is agreed for during the assessment.
CBT is a type of talking therapy that combines cognitive therapy (examining thinking) and behaviour therapy (examining actions). Thus, CBT focuses on how thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and feelings are related and how they affect our emotional and physical sensations, as well as behaviours. CBT helps people to recognize their vicious cycles and teaches coping skills for dealing with different problems.
As a CBT therapist, I can be active and guiding in sessions and I teach ways in which to cope. In therapy, we usually focus on what is going on in your life right now, but we might also look at your past, and think about how your past experiences can impact the way you see the world. I strive to offer a safe, trusting and collaborative relationship, in which you feel respected and supported.
My special interests include Perinatal Mental Health, Mindfulness and Compassion-Focused therapeutic approaches. Currently I’m also undertaking extra training in Family Therapy and Systemic approach and Schema Therapy.
